Midnight Mill Conversion of existing barn to residential, Fressingfield

A new gable wing was added to the side elevation to create a striking new entrance with full height glazing.

The existing barn, prior to its conversion.

The barn under construction. The existing timber structure was retained within new high specification, thermally insulated walls.

The heating and lighting, by Hudson's Electrical, Framlingham , was designed to be as eco-friendly as possible with the installation of a ground source heat pump, ground mounted solar panels and a heat recovery system making the barn totally self-sufficient in energy.

A sleek timber staircase with glazed balustrade cantilevers off the side wall, enhancing the open plan feel of the property. The Clients specified a sleek modern feel to the interior, although some key existing timbers were retained and exposed, retaining elements exploring the history of the building. Bespoke Oak Staircase: Weybread Woodcraft, Fressingfield

A contemporary interior design with sharp lines and striking colours was specified by the Clients, creating a modern family home. Kitchen Designer:  Ashford & Brooks, Woodbridge

A tubular steel frame sits on top of the existing structural posts of the barn and was engineered to maximise the open feel of the vaulted ceiling, without the need for cross members. Built in shelving set between full height slot windows creates some storage space in a unique design, while keeping the main living area free and open plan.

The design concept was to have an open plan living accommodation which flowed through the heart of the building. The full height vaulted ceiling ensures the main dining space feels open and light.
